At the main county jail it is a relatively simple process to post an LA bail bond. Once a person is booked, fingerprinted and has a bail set, a licensed, bonded and insured Bail Bondsman can post bail for them. Within LA County there are several jails and police departments that a person may be held at. When someone is being held at the main jail the process can take several hours.
For a person to get booked into LA County Jail it can take 8-12 hours. After a bail bond in Los Angeles is posted it can take another 6-12 hours to get out. It is not recommended to go to the jail to post a bond or ask questions to the cashiers or jailers. They are very busy and it is unlikely you will get the answers you are looking for. You will not be able to speak with an inmate unless it is visiting hours, you will not be able to pass them a note or call tehm on the phone. Every year in Los Angeles a new Bail Bond Schedule is released. The bail schedule is determined by the judges within the county and is set for all crimes within the county. When someone is charged with a specific crime their bail bond amount is already determined and is a standard amount. The bail schedule is used by the courts, judges, criminal defense attorneys, bail bondsmen, law enforcement and jailers so they all know how much a person bail will be set at for specific crimes.This bail schedule is what determines a persons bail amount. Not the Bondsmen or jails. Bondsman and Jailers do not have anything to do with the bail schedule other than using it as a guide to assist people. A judge is the only person that can change a bail amount. If someone has a bail of $50,000 there is nothing a Bondsman or Jailer can do to lower it. It can only be reduced by the judge and if the bail schedule calls for a $50,000 bail amount for a specific crime it is likely the judge will not reduce the bail either.
Los Angeles has the highest bail bond schedule in the country with the average size bail amount of roughly $20,000. Most misdemeanors in Los Angeles will not require a bail bond to be posted. With jail overcrowding the judges have seen the necessity to free up bed space to allow for more serious offenders to be held at the jails so most misdemeanors will get released without a bail bond. This is not always the case though. If someone has a warrant in Los Angeles on a misdemeanor it is likely they will remain in custody unless a bail bond is posted. With regards to felony charges most defendants will remain in custody until a bail bond is posted or they are found innocent. These people will not be released until a bond is presented or they have completed their trial and sentencing.
